Torquay is a beautiful coastal town located on the South West coast of England, it is 16 miles from Exeter and 38 miles from Plymouth, and has two train stations connecting it to the rest of the country which makes it easy to spend a night out in a neighbouring town or city.

Torquay is a peaceful town filled with beautiful Victorian architecture and lined with 9 beaches. The town also has a large number of Bed and Breakfasts which accommodate the large number of tourists who visit the town each year and a large number of tourist attractions to entertain them.

The tourist attractions in and around Torquay include Kents Cavern which is one of the most important Stone Age sites in Britain which has attracted many famous people over the years including Haile Selassie, King George V, Beatrix Potter and Agatha Christie. Other tourist attractions include Torquay Pavilion, the “Friends Fountain, the marina, Beacon Cove, Torre Abbey, the Babbacombe Model Village and the Princess Theatre.

With it’s beautiful views, stylish boutique shops and gorgeous food in the award winning local restaurants (the calamari in Legends is particularly delicious) it is hard to not fall in love with the town, with one of it’s claims to fame being the location for the tv show Faulty Towers and another claim to fame being that it was the home of the writer Agatha Christie, a result of which is the “Agatha Christie Mile” which is a tour around Torquay with plaques noting important events and places along the mile.

There are many beaches in Torquay, Maidencombe Beach, Matcombe Beach, Oddicombe Beach, Babbacombe Beach, Anstey’s Cove, Redgate Beach, Meadfoot Beach, Torre Abbey Sands, Corbyn Sands and Institute beach, the area of Torquay known as Babbacombe has incredible views from it’s cliff top promenade.

Also, on the seafront of Torquay is the Highflyer balloon, a hot air balloon tethered to the ground that ascends to a height of around 400ft giving tourists (and locals, for that matter) a 360 degree view of the town and sea with up to 30 people being able to go up in each of the four hourly ascents.

If you fancy a day out and slight change of scenery, in the neighbouring town of Paignton lies Paignton Zoo which holds thousands of different creatures from around the world in an incredible space of over 80 acres.Torquay is the perfect place for a peaceful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of city life while still being connected to the nearby metropolises, with enough to do in the town to relieve any boredom and stunning views to watch while you read a book from the comfort of your holiday cottage or apartment.

At the start of May I was fortunate enough to spend a few days at the glorious At The Beach holiday apartments at Torcross in Devon and believe me they are without equal, you could not hope for a better 5 star holiday destination for your self catering holiday, the breathtaking views across Slapton Sands are a delight to behold.

The apartments are decorated and furnished to a very luxurious standard, with all the mod cons and a fabulous designer fitted kitchen. Nothing can beat breakfast on the terrace, basking in the morning sun and listening to the sounds of the sea.

The village of Torcross is blessed with a wonderful pub the Start Bay Inn whose reputation for selling the best fish and chips in Devon is not unfounded. For a quick snack visit the Seaspray cafe the ham, cheese and tomato paninis simply melt in the mouth.

There is a beautiful coastal cliff walk to the rear of the complex which takes you to the nearby village of Beesands and beyond with the option of returning via the beach depending on the tides.
